Safety concept for street festival stands

Concretisation of the measure

The Kirchentag traditionally begins with a large street festival, called Abend der Begegnung. For the congregations from the host protestant Regional Church, the Abend der Begegnung offers the opportunity to welcome guests and to make contact with many visitors. Together with congregations of other denominations, clubs, associations and institutions of the regional church, they create places of encounter in the heart of the Kirchentag city, by offering hands-on activities, a stage programme and regional delicacies. Most of the offers are presented at street festival stands, some of them are self-built.

Preparing for the Kirchentag in Dortmund

During the preparation phase, the providers were trained on many topics. In the context of the KlAnG project, for the first time the sensitization regarding extreme weather situations was part of the training course. Special emphasis was placed on the fact, that stronger winds and storms are to be expected and that a safety concept for the street festival stand must therefore be considered.

Implementation of the Kirchentag in Dortmund

During the execution of the Abend der Begegnung, a risky weather situation actually occurred. Already during construction, the operators of the stands were therefore asked to set up their fuses and to check the stand in particular.

Climate adaptation aspect

Sensitised participants pay more attention to themselves and others – the climate adaptation measures can be taken home and the next community festival is planned with new approaches and insights.
