Development of a travel monitoring system

Concretisation of the measure

People from all directions travel to the Kirchentag and come as participants, speakers or employees. If there are disruptions in the journey, this can have a sensitive impact on the event. Good arrival monitoring enables flexible reversal and minimization of risks due to extreme weather events on arrival.

During the implementation of the Kirchentag in Dortmund

The Kirchentag paid particular attention to the following questions regarding arrival monitoring, which was partly handled decentrally by the respective areas (program, help services, service for participants):

  • Are speakers or artist groups so much affected by travel difficulties that the event cannot be held?
  • Are employees (or in the case of the Kirchentag e.g. also helpers) affected by arrival difficulties, so that certain areas cannot be filled in time?
  • Is a larger number of participants delayed in their arrival so that they have to react at the event, in local transport or in the shared quarters?
Are people affected who need special support?

Environment / climate protection aspect

Good arrival and departure and good reaction to disruptions reduce resource consumption and thus support environmental protection. Collective modes of transport, in particular, rely on functioning infrastructures, while individual modes of transport are more likely to search individually for fault solutions.

Climate adaptation aspect

Traffic infrastructure is one of the particularly vulnerable infrastructure in relation to extreme weather events, as occasional disturbances can shut down entire sections of traffic (e.g. a tree falls on a track, a concrete slab bulges up due to the heat and the highway is blocked).

Cost / benefit / cost

Since the trigger of the disruption is not as important as the effects of the arrival monitoring, an integration of extreme weather events into the arrival monitoring is not particularly complex. In most cases it is already an integral part. Accurate information about the degree of delays and tailored support measures can minimize the impact on event execution.
