Specification of the measure
The nationwide advertised student competition: “Temporary Temperature – Concepts for Cooler Air in Temporary Event Rooms” took place in cooperation with the Technical University of Dortmund and the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences as part of the KlAnG Project.
Preparation within the framework of the Kirchentag in Dortmund
The following information was communicated in advance:
Why climate adaptation?
Climate adaptation means measures to adapt to the consequences of climate change that can no longer be avoided. Climate adaptation thus complements climate protection, which is intended to minimize man-made climate change as much as possible. The concrete consequences of climate change vary regionally across Germany. In addition to an increase in the annual mean temperature, an increase and intensification of extreme weather events (e.g. heat periods) can generally be expected in all regions. In particular these, but also other consequences of climate change, such as Heavy rain events and storms, can affect major events. One of the major events, that must adapt to the changing climate in the course of climate change and should therefore be examined as an example, is the German Evangelical Church Day.
What is Kirchentag?
The Kirchentag is a major event and takes place every two years in another German city with more than 100,000 permanent participants and over 2,000 individual events. In 2019 it will take place in Dortmund from June 19-23. Numerous event locations will take place in temporary buildings (with sizes from the simple 3 * 3m pavilion to the marquee for 3,000 visitors).
Task for the students
In the course of climate change the Kirchentag faces the challenge of temporary event rooms, such as e.g. in hot periods. Having to use tents the Kirchentag would like to forego energy-intensive air conditioning in the future.
Therefore, alternatives are to be developed and outlined that avoid energy-intensive cooling by air conditioning systems at a temporary event location for 1,000 to 1,400 participants. The form of cooling can be chosen freely and is not subject to any restrictions. It can e.g. be organizational, technical or architectural type (e.g. new room concepts) or a combination of these. All though the reduction in the perceived temperature should be noticeable, the focus is on the human well-being of the event visitors. Of course, the solutions should also withstand other weather conditions. The location can be planned in the parking lots A2, A3, A4 of the Westfalenhallen.
The competition is aimed in particular at groups of at least two people from the fields of architecture and civil engineering at German universities and technical colleges. Students of other subjects who deal with buildings and building air conditioning can be admitted on request. Individual work is also permitted.
During the implementation of the Kirchentag in Dortmund
When the Kirchentag was held, the following students could be personally honored for their designs: Ann-Kathrin Bülte (FH Dortmund) for first place, Jan Höckel and Carina Carel (both FH Dortmund) for third and fourth place.
Note
Student competitions sometimes require a long lead time and consistent application to target groups.
