Cooling of large tents through ventilation instead of air conditioning

Concretisation of the measure

The Kirchentag has rented tents for various uses and in various sizes. Events with thousands of people were held in them or information and shop tents served as orientation and for the supply of souvenirs and program booklets in the city area. The 5,000 volunteers were fed centrally in a tent. The traditional Kirchentag Barrier-free Centre, with events and service facilities for people with disabilities, was also housed in a tent.

Preparation within the framework of the Kirchentag in Dortmund

When determining the respective tent uses, it was also determined which tents should be air-conditioned and which tents should only be naturally ventilated. It became apparent that air conditioning seemed to be necessary only in the event tent area. This could be used on demand. Air conditioning should only be used when it is really necessary.

During the implementation of the Kirchentag in Dortmund

Small service tents and also the central catering for helpers were not air-conditioned, but ventilated. Due to the short stay of the guests, the different heat sources and the possibility to work here with draught, was certainly a successful solution. In the event sector the situation was somewhat more differentiated:

In a first phase the tents were only ventilated and supplied with fresh air. Only from temperatures around 26 degrees Celsius outdoors additional air conditioning was provided. It was made sure that the temperature difference with the outside temperatures was not more than 6 degrees Celsius and that it was not below 26 degrees in the tent when air conditioning was used. In addition, ventilation was provided in the evening and night hours to take advantage of the coolness of the night in the morning. Opaque tarpaulins also had a positive effect on reducing the need for air conditioning.

Environmental/climate protection aspect

Not having to install air conditioning systems leads to a more environmentally friendly event. However, alternative solutions must be found to ensure that people can still attend an event in a concentrated manner, otherwise the goal is missed.

Climate adaptation aspect

The weather conditions at this year’s Kirchentag were such, that hardly any air conditioning was required. Further experiences and better control possibilities of the devices should enable further improvements at future Kirchentag events.

Cost/benefit/effort

A demand-driven and intelligent use of available air conditioning equipment leads to significant economic savings. In addition, it is worthwhile to consider carefully whether the comparatively expensive air conditioning systems (with additionally required generators) should be passed. The ability of the participants to concentrate can be hopefully be established by positioning the tent „in a cool ground”.
